Updates!

December 9th, 2009 by Macguffin

I realized the other day that we’ve pretty much been radio-silent since the lack-of-IGF announcement.  Apologies on that!  We’ve pretty much been busting our butts working on the game – so, yes, we’re still very much alive and kicking.

In part, what was at first an instinctual thing on my part became a conscious plan – I haven’t talked too much about the game and how it is shaping up mostly because it’s been changing a lot.  The ideas we had on paper changed as they became functional features, which in turn changed as we moved towards integrating those features with each other, and then again as we are starting to create the first game content.

I promise we will be letting more information out as time goes on – we just want to time it properly and have decent odds the features won’t change in a day or two.

As far as work on the game is progressing: it’s going very well!  Graham and I have been working hard on all fronts.  We may not have something for friends-and-family to play in December, but that’s not a bad thing – we’re finding lots of obvious changes to make as we continue with what I outlined above.  I’ll avoid saying what else I expect for our schedule for now, since I tend to immediately make a liar of myself.

In other news, we will be changing the name of the game.  We have winnowed things down to a handful of favorites, but are going to sit on them and think about it for a bit.  Sadly, “Heritage” is de facto trademarked by The Settlers, or rather the rebranded “Heritage of Kings: The Settlers“.  Because of how trademark law works, they could pretty much argue that any video game title that starts with Heritage is a violation of their trademark.  Somewhat a bummer, but so it goes – since I wouldn’t be surprised that they had to change that title because of friction with Settlers of Catan, I can’t get too bent out of shape about it.

Thanks for reading!  Hit us with any quesitons you might have in the comments.

    Hello !

First of all I’ve registered at the forums about a week ago but the account is still inactive.

Second, after reading about the game I still have absolutely no idea what kind of game are you making..
cRPG ? TBS (turn based strategy) ? RTS ?
In what “age” will it take place ?
Will it have orcs, elves and all the other too common creatures from other games ?
Will it be economy based like settlers or more combat oriented ?
Also I didn’t see any screenshot yet.

I hope you will reveal more details soon.

    Thanks
    Maxim.

Doh! Hey Maxim, apologies. I’ve been putting off dealing with the spambots that beat the heck out of default phpBB installations, and I’m losing people’s registrations until I do. I went through and approved your registration just now, and I’ll fix that problem this morning.

So far, we’ve been quiet about the game on purpose – we’re trying to make sure the game has come far enough to be interesting before we show it off too much, although we’re getting pretty close now.

The game plays like a strategy game, but with a heavy dose or roleplaying game mechanics for the characters. The game is inspired in many ways by the old Microprose RPG Darklands and by the more recent independent title King of Dragon Pass – there’s a lot of stuff in both of those games that we love, and the game uses a lot of what we liked best. The economy is still taking shape, but it’s not an economy-based game. If you’ve ever played the Europa Universalis series or other Paradox games (with the exception of Victoria), the economy is shaping up more along those lines.

More details as soon as we can! Thanks for the interest!

Thanks for the fast replay and the activation of my forum account.
The reason I’m following this game is because it said to have a Linux client, and I am a Linux user/gamer.
Moreover, I run the Linux Gaming News blog :
    http://lgn.linux-hardcore.com

Once we’ll have more details about the game and maybe some screenshots I would be happy to take an interview from you.

Although I never played “King of Dragon Pass” I heard lots of good things about it.

If the cRPG element of your game will be done right , with meaningful choices and consequences and smart dialogs – then I and many other would be very interested to hear more…

If you are into cRPG’s I highly suggest to visit IronTower forums here :

    Thanks
    Maxim.

    Hiho.
I have the same issue with the forum… :)

Despite knowing very little about the game I was hooked by the IGF description.
In my mind it sounded like a story driven king of Dragon Pass, and I lvoe that game.
If it turns out completely different I won’t start crying though.

    Have fun.

    Hey Therlun,

Thanks for coming by! Sorry about that – should be activated now.

Dragon Pass is actually one of the big inspirations for the game, so hopefully you’ll like what we’re doing.

Ohh, I just noticed that you mentioned King of Dragon Pass several times already here.
I just browsed the comments yesterday and started writing a reply right after seeing the forum comment…
Nice to hear that KoDP is an influence as that game has so many charming features really underused in games.

The mentioning of Darklands sounds interesting too.
